Three sights split the travel writers. Valle de la Luna at sunset: one blogger calls the sunset tour overpriced and crowded and points to Vallecito, while Chile Travel says individual visitors may stay inside the reserve for sunset as long as they enter before the 17:30 last admission. So you can do it on your own with an online ticket bought at least a day ahead, or take a guided loop.
On Cejar, one blogger found it crowded and rushed with part of the lagoon closed, and the official ticket gives a timed slot with a 1-hour stay on site and about 20 minutes recommended in the water. Remember the swim and float happen at Laguna Piedra, not in Cejar itself. El Tatio divides most of all: skip it if you have seen geysers in Iceland or New Zealand, or if the Uyuni crossing is next on your list, because the field is busiest at sunrise and 8-9 am is quieter.

El Tatio is the one to drop if altitude bothers you, because it sits at about 4,300 m after a 4:30 am pickup and a roughly 2-hour drive, the hardest combination of the whole trip.
The Best of Atacama: 4 Tours in 3 Days at $329 lists all four park fees as included, but its notes say the El Tatio (CLP 15,000, about $15) and Baltinache (CLP 6,000, about $6) tickets are paid in advance at the agency, so confirm at checkout. Baltinache is a walk for now, since bathing is paused. It has 4.7 from 346 reviews.

Piedras Rojas & Altiplanic Lagoons Full-Day costs $86 over 10 hours with the park fees, breakfast and lunch included, in a small group. Piedras Rojas, Altiplanic Lagoons & Chaxa Full-Day Tour costs $125.59 over 10 hours, includes the Piedras Rojas and Chaxa tickets plus breakfast and lunch, and takes up to 18 travelers. Piedras Rojas, Altiplanic Lagoons & Chaxa, Admission Included costs $161 with every ticket, breakfast and lunch covered, and stops in Socaire and Toconao. Ruta de los Salares Full-Day Salt Flats Tour costs $102.76 over 7 hours and passes only free-entry stops, so no tickets exist. The gap buys tickets, meals, group size and hours.
Individual day tours run roughly $30-150 each. One blogger's five tours across three days came to CLP 186,000 (about $190). The Nomades four-day plan costs CLP 256,000 (about $260) for five tours and airport transfers, but leaves out the Tebenquiche, Valle de la Luna and El Tatio fees, so carry extra pesos for those.

Both work, and each has a real advantage. The honest answer depends on which tour you want and when you travel.
Agencies line Caracoles street in San Pedro and more than 100 of them compete for walk-ins. On-site prices can be $10-20 cheaper per person than booking online, and operators offer multi-tour discounts when you book several days together. Two cautions from the same sources.
First, many 3-5 tour bundles sold in town leave the entry fees out, so ask exactly which tickets are in the price. Second, a refund from an on-site agency usually requires you to be physically present, which is no use once you have left town. Waiting suits flexible travelers on shoulder-season dates hunting simple landscape tours.
Worth it if you have spare days and do not care which operator you get.
Stargazing tours fill about a week ahead and stop running for a few days either side of full moon, because a bright moon washes out the Milky Way. El Tatio, stargazing and Piedras Rojas sell out in the July-August and December-February peaks. Every listing here carries free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, so reserving early costs nothing if plans change.
Timed tickets add a second reason to plan ahead: Valle de la Luna entries must be bought online at least a day in advance, and Cejar, Chaxa and the Piedras Rojas combined ticket also sell timed or dated slots online. Shared departures have thresholds. The Piedras Rojas, Miscanti and Chaxa route needs at least 9 passengers or the departure is rescheduled or refunded. A Cejar float operator runs with a minimum of 6 and otherwise merges its departure with a partner agency.
The shared Calama airport shuttle needs 4 passengers to run. Weather is a separate cause of cancellations, since storms over the high Andes can close altiplano roads for a day, and some operators refund in full when that happens. Read the cancellation terms before you pay, because local operators can be stricter than the 24-hour standard.

You are back in San Pedro before midday, tired and cold. That leaves the afternoon free for an easy tour, and it is why stargazing the night before an El Tatio day is a bad idea.
The Piedras Rojas and altiplano lagoon days leave at 7:00 and run to about 18:00, climbing to roughly 4,000-4,200 m. Pack sunscreen and a brimmed hat, because the walks have no shade and the sun at altitude burns even on cold mornings.
The lagoon float tours start early or in the afternoon. The afternoon slot is the better swim, with a timed one-hour stay at Laguna Piedra and about 20 minutes recommended in the water. Bring a swimsuit and towel, and no sunscreen in the lagoon.
The classic sunset tour departs mid-afternoon and returns around 19:30. Carry water, because nothing is sold once you are on tour, and the hottest hours run from 11:00 to 16:00.
The night ends with telescopes at a dark-sky site outside town, usually from 19:40 to 22:30. Layers again, because desert nights drop fast after sunset.
Hotel pickup covers lodging in San Pedro's urban area only. Staying in the nearby ayllus or in Toconao means meeting at a set point instead.
The two salt-lagoon swim spots have very different rules right now. One takes timed tickets, the other has suspended bathing entirely.
The swim happens at Laguna Piedra inside the Cejar site, not at Laguna Cejar itself, which is a viewing lagoon for flamingos and salt crusts. Entry is a timed online ticket giving one hour on site, with about 20 minutes recommended in the water. Children under 6 are not suited to the swim, and sunscreen, oil and cream are banned in the lagoon.
The afternoon slot is the best one, when the sun is strongest and the water is coldest in a good way, and the water is warmer from December to March. One tour listing says the site closes Tuesdays for maintenance. Bring a swimsuit and towel and plan a shower afterwards.

Bathing and floating are suspended in all seven Baltinache lagoons until about the end of November for maintenance and natural regeneration. One lagoon is expected to reopen for floating in December, but that is unconfirmed, so check locally before planning a swim. The site stays open in the meantime for walking and viewpoints, and it is quieter than usual since the ban.
The entry fee during the pause is CLP 6,000 adult (about $6) against the CLP 12,000 (about $12) standard fee, paid in cash on site. If floating is the whole point of your visit, put your swim day at Laguna Piedra instead and treat Baltinache as a walk.

Daytime highs in San Pedro de Atacama stay mild all year. What changes is the night: winter brings the coldest dawns and the crispest skies, while January and February can see afternoon cloud from the Altiplanic Winter.
Temperatures are typical daytime highs in °C for San Pedro de Atacama (2,407 m), with °F underneath. The high-altitude stops are far colder: El Tatio at dawn averages about -6 °C in summer and can fall to -20 °C in winter. Stargazing is excellent in any month if you avoid the week around the full moon.
Altitude shapes every Atacama itinerary. Use this ladder to sequence your days: sleep low, climb progressively, and save the summits for last.
Rule of thumb: no more than 1,500 m of day-trip gain on your first two days, and keep summit hikes for day three or later.

Stargazing, the buggy runs and the sunrise balloon are guided only, since the telescopes, dark-sky sites and vehicles are private. El Tatio by car means navigating gravel in the dark before dawn at 4,300 m, which is a different matter from a midday drive. A rental costs about CLP 70,000 a day (about $71), and cars for the December-February peak should be booked a month ahead, with the best choice at Calama airport.

Stay in town if you can, because hotel pickup on every tour covers the urban area of San Pedro only. Lodging in the ayllus around town or in Toconao means walking or driving to a meeting point for each departure. The town itself is small and walkable, so within the center the exact address barely matters. Book early: rooms fill weeks ahead in the June-August and December-February peaks. Price bands run hostels at $15-50, mid-range at $60-150 and lodges at $200-500 or more per night. One saving worth knowing: non-residents who show the entry card stamped with their passport are exempt from lodging VAT.

Flights from Santiago to Calama take about 2 hours over 1,227 km, served by the main Chilean carriers. Antofagasta airport is the alternative gateway, about 4 hours by road from San Pedro. Overland, the border routes matter most: San Pedro to Uyuni is about 450 km, usually covered over 3 days on the Uyuni crossing, and Salta in Argentina is about 480 km.
